The Automobile Association (The AA) launched in 1905 as a body initially intended to help motorists avoid police speed traps. Over the years the company expanded to produce road maps and breakdown services and today is the leading breakdown and repair agent. As it grew in size, the AA moved into providing additional products such as insurance as an independent insurance intermediary. Today it has over 1.6 million home and motor insurance policies in force. Breakdown history is one of the major factors that form part of the premiums assessment.

Until recently The AA was owned by Centrica but was recently sold to CVC Capital Partners and Permira.

Admiral

Admiral was launched in 1993 with the aim of offering lower premiums to more people. Admiral has been providing online quotes since 2000. Admiral specialises in low cost car insurance for younger drivers, people living in cities and those driving performance cars.

In 2005 Admiral launched MultiCar. A MultiCar policy offers households with two or more cars an easier way to get cheaper car insurance cover.
